The State Fishery Officers’ Association, West Bengal is celebrating its Golden Jubilee Year. It started its journey in the year 1973 and has completed glorious 50 years. SFOA, WB is a registered Association that includes the Block level Fishery Extension Officer upto the Additional Director of Fisheries (Tech) as its proud Members in the Fisheries Department, Govt. of West Bengal.
SFOA, WB does not only take care to safeguard the right & interest of its Members but is also very careful for all-round development of the Fisheries & Aquaculture sectors as well as socio-economic development of the Fishers in West Bengal.
Department of Fisheries, Government of West Bengal has a very long history since 1911. At present, West Bengal occupies the 2nd place in total fish production (18 LT) and the 1st place in fish seed production in the Country. Even if we consider the State Domestic Product (SDP), the fishery occupies the second place in the state among the Agriculture and allied activities. Almost 32 lakh people earn their livelihood from this sector in the State. West Bengal has a fisheries potentiality of about 34 LT. So, the Department of Fisheries, Government of West Bengal has enough scope for further growth of this “Sunrise” sector.
Huge numbers of developmental as well as welfare measures have been taken by the Fisheries Department, WB for last few years. The Department has fixed a target of doubling the production by next three years. Our Association whole heartedly supports this decision and all sorts of helps will be made to achieve the target. We also expect a restructuring of the Directorate of Fisheries, Govt. of WB at per with the Dept. of Agriculture, ARD etc. at an early respecting the dream of our Hon’ble Chief Minister, Smt. Mamata Banerjee to make the State No. 1 in fish production in the Country again.
